"You get man?"
"No I have no husband."
"You get pickins?"
"No, no children."
"Is that why they sent you here?"
Kushe. I'm Em Joy. When I was first posted as a doctor with Voluntary Service Overseas in Sierra Leone, I was going to save the world, save lives, save my soul, lose weight and find a man.
I might have saved a few lives, but Sierra Leone's horrendous civil war put all my petty ambitious in their place. Instead I wrote of my thwarted attempts to achieve those goals in Green Oranges on Lion Mountain.
Now I have a husband and three children, which makes saving the world even trickier. I wrote The Accidental Optimist's Guide to Life instead. Now I just want to keep smiling, and hopefully make those around me smile too. If there's any time left, then perhaps I'll have another shot at saving the world/lives/my soul.
Meanwhile, I'm a GP member of the Scottish Antimicrobial Prescribing Group - hardly exciting, but if we're already squandering a precious resource, and if we overuse antibiotics now, we won't be able to save lives in the future. Losing weight can wait.
